Money Notes

If you think this article is about installing more energy saving light bulbs and insulation in your property, please read no further.

Commendable and energy saving as these are, some of the biggest savings to be had, come from shopping around online.

Cut Household Costs - Money Saving

To help find the most competitive gas, electricity and phone suppliers, online companies like uSwitch and Energy Helpline, help you easily compare and change suppliers. Gather together your past utility bills before you start to hunt for the best deal.

Like multi pack offers at your local supermarket these days it's often worth pricing individually too, as the best deal isn't necessarily taking your gas and electricity from the same supplier.

This is an easy option but not always the cheapest.

Back to that multi pack at the supermarket, have you noticed it can be cheaper buying individually on some of those offers?

How does it work?  uSwitch an example - Uswitch logo

You compare and select the supplier you wish to change to, then complete a straight forward form on the web site.

uSwitch then contacts your existing and future suppliers doing all the hard work for you. This normally takes a few weeks, you can then look forward to lower bills, sometimes much lower.

You could benefit from lower bills through uSwitch or   Energy Helpline - trusted utility compare and save web sites.

Latest Money Saving News

With the rising energy prices a recent poll on moneysupermarket.com revealed that the majority of consumers believe they are paying too much for their gas and electricity and that recent price increases are totally unjustified.

Five of the big six energy firms - British Gas, EDF Energy, Eon, Npower and Scottish Power - have increased their gas and electricity prices by an average of 15% since the beginning of the year.

The typical household now pays more than £1,000 a year for energy - up from around £650 three years ago.

What should consumers do?

The message is simple - move to the best deal you can. Despite the recent price increases, there are still significant savings to be made.

Six out of 10 households have never changed their energy provider and are still on the standard tariff paying quarterly by cash or cheque. By switching to an online tariff and opting to pay monthly by direct debit, the average household could save up to £260 a year.

Which provider works out to be the cheapest, will depend on your consumption and whereabouts in the country you live. A gas and electricity comparison tool should identify the cheapest deal in your area.

• Average British Gas dual fuel bill rocketed by 85% or £513 (2004 - 2006) but only fell by 19% or £208 last year.

Although
uSwitch and Energy Helpline have been around for a while there are other price comparison sites emerging, such as MoneySuperMarket and Save on your Bills.

Don’t delay, compare and save now and avoid paying too much!

Shopping Comparison web sites are they any good?

Yes, the likes of Kelkoo and Pricerunner can be good, especially for a quick price comparison check. If you have not used them try them out and bookmark them.

What to look out for -

If you are planning to buy high value goods like a new TV or video camera carry out some additional searches on Amazon, eBay, and online high street stores such as Comet and Dixons.

Why? Simply because Shopping Comparison sites don't search all shops. Shops have to sign up with the comparison site and pay them a small commission on the sale price. That's how they make their money.

I am wary when using Kelkoo for buying electrical goods that Comet doesn't appear in the results. So I manually check prices at the Comet web site.

Also watch out if travelling into town to buy goods as the in-store price is normally more expensive than buying online. Comet Online is one of the few web sites to display the in-store price next to the online price.

While on that subject of in-store prices - PC World has a very good system where you have an option to order online but collect the item at your local store. It allows you to order in advance at the discounted web price but collect the item in person at your closest PC World.

I've used this service often and have been very pleased with it, no waiting on delivery. Of course it depends how far you have to travel to PC World.

To sum up Price Comparison sites like Kelkoo and Pricerunner are great for quickly searching a range of online stores giving a very quick indication of item price.

These sites regularly update who they deal with so there is nothing to say what shops may come and go from their list of associates in the future.

All in all Kelkoo & Pricerunner are well worth saving to your favourites.
