Q. Do I need a new TV or can I convert it?
A. It's unlikely that you will need a new TV unless you want one. You will need a digital box whether that's supplied from a satellite company, cable company or an aerial. Even if you have an aerial just now you will still need a digital box in order to decode the digital signal, or you will need a digital TV.
If you are thinking of changing your TV, you could opt for one with a built in digital decoder.
If using an existing aerial, depending on signal strength in your area you may need an aerial upgrade.
An aerial upgrade will be somewhere around £75 to £150. Look out for installers that carry the 'digital tick’ logo or are registered with the CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries).
Q. Do all TV's in the house need a digital box?
A. Every TV that you currently use to receive TV signals will need converted. Unless
it is already digital.
For example, say you have SKY digital on your TV in the lounge, but still use an aerial on the TV in the bedroom. You will need to either subscribe to SKY multi room or buy a Freeview box to supply digital channels to the bedroom TV via your aerial. You may require an aerial upgrade.
Freeview boxes are relatively inexpensive and are available form online stores such as Asda Electricals, Tesco Direct and John Lewis.
Q. Do I need a new video recorder? What can Digital Recorders do?
A. No, but with digital TV there are more options for playing back and recording TV.
Say you want to record one digital channel while watching another. To do this you will need a digital TV recorder with one or more digital tuners. Examples of these would include Sky+ , Virgin Media, BT Vision or Freeview Playback, like the ‘Sharp’ model below. A digital TV recorder with a twin tuner, enables recording of one channel while watching another.
Whatever you buy, look out for the pink digital tick logo. Read customer reviews of items at Amazon or try Which ? For impartial consumer advice.
Sky+, a favourite of Pointme2it, allows you to pause live TV at anytime, you don't have to be recording it. Sky+ has a hard drive, which can play and record at the same time. So when TV is paused, Sky+ is still recording the rest of the programme in the background. You can watch one channel and record another.
Most Digital TV recorders like Sky+ have an electronic program guide (EPG) which allows easy selection of programmes to record, or to simply find out what's on next.
Digital brings not only more channels but more ways to enjoy TV, including on screen TV guides and press the red button interactive TV
