Slash Printing Costs

Slash your printing costs buy ink before you buy the printer! Sounds a bit odd or perhaps you know where I'm going already.

If you are happy to spend more money than you need to on a printer and ink please read no further.

What I'm going to discuss isn't just about buying compatible ink cartridges, there is another consideration.

“ So the sting in the tail is  these demonstration ink cartridges"

If you are looking at buying a new printer, the first plan of attack is to price genuine and compatible replacement ink cartridges before you are influenced by a printer’s features or price.

Beware the price of the printer is often heavily discounted; the cost is recouped when you go to replace the ink cartridges with genuine ink. Many relatively cheap 'All in one devices' are sold below cost as buying replacement ink can often cost about as much as the printer itself.

The manufactures are cunning in that many provide only demonstration ink cartridges with new devices. It's like when you buy certain kids toys that have demonstration batteries which aren't designed to last long.

So the sting in the tail is these demonstration ink cartridges, aka cartridges which have about a quarter of the ink as a normal cartridge. Otherwise you could have a situation where buying a new printer works out cheaper than buying replacement genuine ink cartridges.

 Steps to consider

1 Use a quality ink supplier such as MyMemory to quickly check the cost of ink cartridges whether you prefer compatible or genuine ink.

2 Having priced the ink now reconsider the device manufacturer, perhaps the printer you are looking at is slightly more expensive in it's up front cost.

3 If you have only ever used genuine ink consider the following. Compatible ink from reputable dealers can be as good a quality as the far more expensive genuine article.

For years I was extravagant with my hard earned money buying genuine Epson printer ink. Several printers later I use compatible cartridges for my photo printing and have had no problems.

Read Reviews on Printers at Amazon - search for the printer that interests you in Electronics & Photo then scroll down to see if there are any consumer reviews.

The Basement is a new online shop from RM. Here you will find the very latest prices and the three easy steps to order.

You click on your town and the school your child goes to, then pick your software at the huge discounted price.

Go to - The basement (from RM) for latest pricing and software.

Does this sound too good, please view this Microsoft description of The Basement on Microsoft.com.

Pointme2it would not risk it’s reputation if this site for students and parents were nothing but genuine.

The place of education also benefits from each sale.

More Places to look for low cost genuine software.

If you are not eligible above the next two places to look are  eBay then Amazon.

With eBay, browse to the Computing category then Software.

What to look out for – Is VAT included, read all of the listing carefully and what’s the postage cost. For extra confidence choose software advertised as ‘Brand New and Sealed’.

Categories of software –

Education or Academic versions of software are made available to:

Students, teachers, schools, colleges, employees of schools and colleges, non-profit organisations, Libraries, and charitable organisations and others based on qualification criteria.

This software will behave the same as full retail equivalent commercial versions. By purchasing the software you are indicating that you meet the eligibility requirements of the software being purchased.

OEM – software is a little bit different and bargains can be had on eBay.

It’s worth noting that OEM software is intended for system builders and small OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) who manufacture computer systems and pre install OEM system builder software onto those systems. It is not intended for purchase or installation by consumers.

In fact many people sell OEM software and supply a small piece of computer hardware (a cable) with it to meet the terms of the licence agreement.  OEM software can be significantly cheaper. Please comply with the software licence.

The expensive way of getting software is to walk straight into PC world. If of course you like the idea of going into the PC World shop you can order from PC World online and select the ‘Collect @ Store’ option if available.

You can often get items cheaper than simply walking into the store. So after selecting Collect at Store you print your confirmation and go to the store you selected.

They will take your print out and return with your item.

As easy as that, with the added bonus, you may have got the item cheaper than walking into the PC World store.

No waiting for delivery just go and pick it up.

Give your PC a performance boost with more memory

Crucial are the memory experts who bring high quality at a value prices. There are two quick easy to use systems on the Crucial homepage. These are -

Crucial System Scanner tool

Scan your computer to find out what is already inside your system and get recommended upgrades.

Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool

The Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool is a quick, 3-step process to find guaranteed-compatible memory for computers and motherboards.

I have heard so many stories of people buying cheap unbranded memory which then starts giving computer lock ups and systems crashes. I speak from experience on this one, hence why I’m recommending branded memory from Crucial.

They have lot’s of support resources and installation guides, it’s nothing like as hard as you might think to fit some extra RAM in your PC or laptop.

It can be as simple as taking the side of the PC and slotting in the extra memory strip in a vacant slot. Your PC will automatically see this and use it, nothing else to do but enjoy faster computing!

Adding extra memory will give your PC a significant performance boost, have a look at Crucial UK.

Send Large Files

Do you want to send large files, photos and video by e-mail? Pointme2it will show you how.

Did you know, Internet Service Providers impose restrictions on the size of emails you can send and receive? Normally you would only be allowed to send up to 10Mb in size, which is about 15 digital photographs.

If you wanted to send a folder with 90 digital photographs (60Mb), you will need to use a file transfer service such as ‘You Send It’ or ‘Send This File’.

Yousendit

These file transfer services make it easy to send those holiday photos, and video clips to anyone with an e-mail address.

How does it work?

Using ‘You Send It’ as an example. They allow free transfers up to 100mb, and paid for services after that. They have been about for years, and I find them very reliable.

1.  Enter the recipients e-mail address

2.  Enter your email address and a short note if you wish.

3.  Browse and attach the file you wish to send.

4.  Hit Send it’s that easy.

What happens next?

The recipient receives an e-mail with a link to click which takes them to a web page to download the file. They know it's from your e-mail address, and they have a set amount of days in which to download the file.

So how do they make their money?

Basically from ads which are displayed while the file downloads, and also from any paid for services i.e sending files larger than 100Mb.

TIP - It's normally worth zipping up the folder you wish to send. It makes it easier to select multiple files.

Using these file transfer services is an excellent way of sending photos, PowerPoint presentations, and video clips.
